Q&A

Q&A

  • 1. Where Are You Located?

Our office is located in Nixa, Missouri. We work in all of the Southwest Missouri region.

  • 2. How Do I Decide Where to Drill My Well?

It is important to consider various factors when deciding where to drill, but the best advice is to ask a specialist. Here are some important considerations:

    • Terrain and accessibility of the well site, as it is now, and as it will be in the future with any nearby planned construction
    • Distances from property lines and septic systems — the legal distances may vary based on where you live
    • Location of homes and outbuildings — as they are now, and as they might be later
    • Electric and other utility lines
  • 3. Do I Need a Permit to Drill a Well?

Yes, but check with the county you are constructing the well in to see how this applies to you.

The State of Missouri requires a well certification report after completion of the well, which we will provide as part of a job "well" done

  • 4. How Deep Will I Have to Go to Find Water?

Wells will vary in many ways, so the short answer to this question is: it depends.

Geological formations in your area will determine the depth and yield of your well, as well as the construction techniques required to drill your well safely and properly.

From our experience and through a process of researching other wells in your area, we can provide you with a better idea of what will be required to construct a well on your site. From there we will be able to estimate the cost for your well.

  • 5. How Much Water Will I Need?

Again, this depends on your needs. The average usage is 100 gallons per day per person. Remember, though, that landscaping is a major consideration when thinking about water usage.

  • 6. What Is Casing and How Much Will I Need?

Casing is a metal or plastic pipe designed to sheath the borehole. It is used to seal out contamination and hold back the surrounding rock and soil and prevent rust.

Casing is installed according to the requirements of the Missouri Department of Natural Resources (DNR) with respect to your well location.

  • 7. What Is a PVC Liner and Do I Need One?

A PVC liner is similar to a casing, but it is made from a very hard plastic called PVC (poly-vinyl chloride). A PVC liner is used to seal out contamination and hold back formation and prevent rust. PVC liner is located on the inside of the casing and borehole.

  • 8. How Do You Determine Which Pump Is Good for My Well?

First, we determine the amount of water available from the well. We do this through drilling or testing, and comparing that with the amount of water you will need.

It is important that your pump is large enough for your water usage, but it is also important that the well not be over pumped. Our experts will look at all the factors to eliminate over pumping and reduce the pump's cycling time. This way, we are able to increase the lifespan of the pump.

  • 9. Do I Need a Well House?

A well house is designed to protect the components that are needed to run the pump system. It is important that the controls and the tank are protected from the elements and not allowed to freeze.

If you have enough room, the controls and pressure tank can be placed inside your home, typically in a utility room or basement. It is also possible to put the tank and controls in a pit, which eliminates the need for a well house.

  • 10. How Much Will My Well and Pump Cost?

There are quite a number of variables involved in estimating the cost of a well and pump. Contact Hewitt-Messenger Well Drilling and Pump Service with your specific needs and your location. Our experts can estimate the cost accurately, if you provide us with enough information. Our phone number is (417) 725-8816 and we are happy to help!

  • 11. My Well Is Going Dry, What Should I Do?

The answer to this question depends on many factors, so one answer will not apply to everyone. Contact us at (417) 725-8816 and allow us to help you figure out the right answer to this question.

Generally, though there are a few options to consider, you may be able to deepen your existing well.

There are other factors that can affect how well your water well system functions. For example, a sprinkler system which is too large for your well may make it seem as though your well is under producing. What is really happening, in this example, is that the water you are expecting inside is coming up out of the well, but is being diverted elsewhere.

It is important to consider your well's capabilities when looking at all the different ways you use water.

12. Can You Give Me Some Idea of Average Water Consumption?

For figuring daily water consumption, of families of varying sizes, in different parts of the country, 100 gallons per day per person is a good average. In addition, here are some water uses and approximate consumption rates.

Usage Gallons per Use Gallons per Minute
Shower 25-60 5
Bathtub 35 5
Lavatory 1-2 4
Toilet Flush 3-7 4
Kitchen Sink 5
Laundry Tub 7
Washing Machine 30-50 5
Dishwasher 10-20 2
Water Softener up to 150 7
Garden Hose 1/2'' 3
Garden Hose 3/4'' 6
Lawn Sprinkler 3-7
  • 13. What Is a Pitless Adapter?

It is a threaded metal connector that allows you to connect your service line directly to your pump pipe, through the well, below the frost line.
